World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is an annual global awareness day on March 21 that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The DSA of Pittsburgh is excited to share the many ways that we are celebrating WDSD! From inclusion projects to fundraisers, we've got you covered to make a difference this WDSD season. Are you ready to ROCK YOUR SOCKS at the virtual WDSD Dance on 3/21? From 3-4P will be “General Admission” where DJ Eric will be playing your favorite Disney themes, “Baby Shark,” etc. Make sure those kids are rested and ready to party! Then from 4-5P will be the “Main Event” where DJ Eric invites our teens and adults to party to contemporary and dance hits! Come for one or both hours! Once you register, your Zoom link is your all access pass. Now we have added an "After Party" with Mikayla Holmgren, self-advocate, model, speaker, and athlete! "After Party" will be immediately following the dance, so hang tight on Zoom. Can't decide what to wear? Don't worry. DSA of Pittsburgh has brought you lots of options!. We have custom-made t-shirts (orders ended 3/3) for purchase as well as PALS socks (orders ended 3/3)! Visit any Pittsburgh area Penn Station Subs and "Round-Up for Down Syndrome" and funds raised support DSAP. We have also partnered with One Hope Wine and 10% of sales now through 3/21 go directly to DSAP! Feel free to share them with friends and family. Lastly, we are encouraging all to take the “Pledge 3-21” and donate $21 a month to sustain the DSA of Pittsburgh as we continue to provide more programming, Family Connection Series, Speaker Series, the Family Care Fund, and some exciting new initiatives like “New Parents Welcome Boxes.” ROCK YOUR SOCKS for Down syndrome, Pittsburgh!

World Down Syndrome Day, 3/21 is a day we celebrate the individuals in our lives with Down syndrome. It's a season for advocacy. I will never forget my first World Down Syndrome Day. I was still processing what the diagnosis meant for our family and our future. As I watched the people in this community celebrating Down syndrome, I began to feel something different. I felt pride to be a part of something so special. I often reflect on how it felt reading the stories of other parents on this journey. It brought me so much comfort about the future and how much potential our children truly hold. Our words have the power to make an impact.
Do you have some insights to share for the new moms in our community? We are looking for heartfelt stories and essays about the special person in your life with that extra chromosome. What have they taught you? Please submit your essay no longer than 700 words and a photograph to info@dsapgh.org. We will publish these pieces on our website and share them on social media. Thank you for helping us celebrate this WDSD! |

World Down Syndrome Day Toolkits - Speaker Series held on Wednesday, February 24 at 7pm As World Down Syndrome Day is coming up in March, DSAP wants to help you advocated for acceptance and inclusion at your child's school. In partnering with Common Ground Society, their mission is to educate and empower communities to be more compassionate, accepting, and inclusive of people with disabilities. Our speaker was Larkin O'Leary, who is the founder of CGS, educator, and fellow Mom in our Ds community. Because of it being a copyrighted program, please email us at info@dsapgh.org to request to view the recording. |
